Movers and shakers in the industry

TJ Sterling recently joined Nora Lighting, based in Commerce, Calif., as a marketing consultant. Sterling will assist the management and staff in developing marketing strategies and creating sales support programs for sales representatives. As a consultant and veteran of the lighting industry, he has worked with Colortran, Lee Filters, Genlyte Thomas’ Accent Division, and most recently served as CEO of Glass Illuminations, Inc. He is also president of the Los Angeles section of the Illuminating Engineering Society.
     In addition, Michael Collier has joined Nora Lighting as its Northeast regional sales manager; he is based in Youngstown, Ohio. Collier brings 11 years of lighting experience to his new position. Previously, he was the regional sales manager at Northbrook, Ill.-based Con-Tech Lighting, where he was responsible for developing that territory and forming a rep force. He has many years of expertise in the specification market and has also worked with architects, designers, and electrical engineers.
     Greenwich, Conn.-based JJI Lighting Group, Inc. has elected James F. Haworth as president and CEO. He immediately replaces Richard L. Crossland, who has resigned to pursue other interests. Haworth joined the company’s Alkco Lighting division in January 1993 and has held several progressive management positions, culiminating in vp/general manager. Most recently, he has served as group vice president for the company’s indoor lighting group which includes Alkco Lighting, Guth Lighting, Morlite Systems, Inc., Specialty Lighting, and Vista Lighting. He is a graduate of the Loyola University School of Business in Chicago, is a CPA, and earned an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
     Based in Torrance, Calif., LEDtronics® has named Edwin Taylor as its new sales representative for Canada. A native of Canada and based in Ontario, Taylor brings an insider’s approach to the Canadian electronics marketplace. He has over 25 years of experience in electronics, manufacturing, and sales. Taylor will provide the Canadian marketplace with application assistance and other value-added customer service.
     Jeffrey Mizel has joined the company as its district sales manager for Upstate New York, New York City, northern New Jersey, Florida, and Puerto Rico. Based in Long Beach, N.Y., Mizel has more than 32 years of experience in the electronics industry.
     Headquartered in Garden City, N.Y., W.A.C Lighting has appointed Richard Kurtz as president and COO. (Tony Wang will remain active in the business, retaining the titles of chairman and CEO.) Most recently vp/operations, Kurtz will oversee the daily operations of the company, including research and development, engineering, sales and marketing, finance, distribution, and production. Kurtz has been in the lighting industry for over 20 years, including 16 years as senior vice president/operations for Lightolier, part of the Genlyte Group. He has also held the position of vice president of the JJI Group, president of Stull Technologies, and served as the COO of The Stiffel Company.
     Coopersburg, Pa.-based Lutron Electronics has promoted Dave Odess to vp/international sales. Odess joined Lutron in 1995 as the company’s worldwide strategic project manager responsible for international project sales and tracking. He was promoted to director/European operations in 1999, at which time he moved to London to oversee the company’s aggressive growth in the European marketplace. Under his direction, Lutron expanded its offices in Germany and the United Kingdom, and established offices in France and Spain. In his new role, Odess will continue to drive sales worldwide and establish offices in China.
     Cincinnati-based FRCH Design Worldwide has promoted Shane Kavanagh to vp/specialty retail documentation and rollout. In addition to contributing to the design process, Kavanagh will be responsible for adapting the design to each site, producing the construction documents, and providing construction administration services. A 10-year veteran of FRCH, he has managed some of the company’s major rollout relationships, including Charles Schwab, Cingular Wireless, Discovery Channel, The Disney Store, Stride Rite, Starbucks, TGI Friday’s, and Timberland.
     Rancho Dominguez, Calif.-based Glenwood Designs has appointed John Wratten as the company’s new vp/sales & marketing.
     Horton Lees Brogden Design, with offices in New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, has appointed three new associates. Lee Hanel, LC, is an associate in the New York City office. Recent projects that she has worked on are: Disney’s POP Century Resort in Orlando, Fla.; the Pennsylvania Academy of Music building in Lancaster, Pa.; Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort in Orlando; and the University of Houston’s Student Wellness Center. Hanel is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), and is Lighting Certified (LC) by the National Council on Qualifications for Lighting Practioners. She has also trained for LEED Certification and is active in the New York chapter of the IES Sustainability program.
     Guy Smith, LC, AIA, is an associate in the Los Angeles office of Horton Lees Brodgen Design. As an architect, he is responsible for the design of a wide variety of building types. Some of his most recent projects include: the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas; Crocker Park in Westlake, Ohio; Tempe Performing & Visual Arts Center in Arizona; and Santana Row in San Jose, California. Smith is licensed as an architect in the state of California, a member of the American Institute of Architects, and is Lighting Certified by the National Council on Qualifications for Lighting Practitioners. He is also an officer of the board of directors for Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions.
     Ann Little is an associate in Horton Lees Brodgen Design’s Los Angeles office. She is a lead coordinator of marketing efforts and database systems, and the office administrator for the Los Angeles office.
     Horton Lees Brodgen Design has also welcomed four new designers to its firm. Eleni Savvidou joins the New York City office. She is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES) and received a BS degree in Electrical Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece, as well as a Masters in Lighting Design from Parson School of Design in New York City. She has worked in television and theatrical lighting design in Greece for five years prior to emigrating to America.
     Justin Horvath has been appointed to the Los Angeles office. Horvath received his BS degree in Architectural Engineering from the University of Colorado in Boulder.
     Jame Mandle, LC, has joined the San Francisco office of Horton Lees Brodgen Design. He holds a BS degree from Skidmore College and received a Masters of Architecture from the University of Oregon. He is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES), is Lighting Certified (LC) by the National Council on Qualifications for Lighting Practitioners, and a member of The Lighting Forum lecture committee. Most recently, Mandle designed and manufactured lighting fixtures for high-end residential projects.
     Jay Wratten has joined the San Francisco office of Horton Lees Brodgen Design. He received a BS degree in Architectural Engineering from the University of Kansas. He is a student member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America.
     Headquartered in Escondido, Calif., Stingray Lighting has named Westminster, Co.-based Mountain-view Lighting Group as its sales rep firm for the state of Colorado.
     At a recent national sales meeting, Cleveland-based Hinkley Lighting inducted a select group of sales representatives into its Platinum Club, where membership is earned by achieving the highest level of sales during a one-year period. Winners were awarded round-trip airfare to the International Lighting Show in Dallas, hotel accom-modations in Dallas, and a luxury cruise for two in Mexico.      The company was also proud to announce that the 2002 Rep of the Year was Pam Willis of Walker Enterprises, which handles the New England territory.
     Hinkley Lighting also honored long-time lighting representative, Jack Raley, by naming a new outdoor family of lanterns after him. Company president Rick Wiedemer said the Raley series is a proper tribute to Raley’s 28 years of service to the company and his 48 years of dedication to the lighting industry.
     Niles, Ill.-based A.L.P. Lighting Components has appointed Bob Murphy as Western regional sales manager. Murphy has a strong background in energy management in the lighting industry. At Sun Industries, he designed projects for energy reduction measures for commercial, industrial, and multi-family residential customers. At Sli Lighting Solutions, Murphy established maintenance and retrofit upgrade programs for a variety of facilities, from major supermarket chains to contract energy service providers.
     In his new position, he will be responsible for promoting sales to plastic, HVAC, acoustical and electrical distributors throughout 14 states in the Western region, including Alaska and Hawaii.
